“London-based, brown, female, working class design and tech creatives” and co-founders of The Other Box
The Other Box was founded by Leyya Sattar and Roshni Goyate: in their words, “London-based, brown, female, working class, state-school-educated second/third-generation immigrants”. Leyya and Roshni work as creatives in design and tech. Some years into their respective careers, they realised they weren’t represented in high-profile positions in the industry. So they founded The Other Box to change that.
They work to enlighten agencies and the industry on how to create more inclusive and diverse teams. They do this through specially designed interactive workshops, which question unconscious biases and exclusionary language and behaviour. They also work to empower their vast network of creative professionals from minority communities, encouraging each other to speak up and be heard, through inspiring talks, meet-ups and special events.
Earlier this year they were listed as Ad Age ‘Women to Watch in Europe 2018’, Campaign Magazine x Creative Equals: ‘Future creative leaders’, listed as part of The Dots ‘200 women redefining the creative industries’ and finalists in the Breaking New Ground category at the WOW Women in the Creative Industries awards (alongside gal-dem, FKA Twigs and Imogen Heap). Between them, they’ve also won an award for diversity with We Are The City, been recognised through She Says UK’s I AM REINDEER campaign, made the BIMA 100 and been shortlisted for the Major Diversity award with Major Players.
